Super Somerset Stages!

Racingist Young Driver protege Aaron Jones enjoyed a successful Somerset Stages by scoring a confidence boosting class podium.

The Caerphilly-based driver was partnered for the first time by 17 year-old Owen Evans, as the promising young crew mounted their BTRDA Rally series campaign.

Jones, a previous Welsh Junior Tarmac Rally Champion gelled immediately with his new navigator and with the first two stages of the event run on the tarmac of Porlock, the duo’s confidence together was reflected in the timesheets.

An unfortunate puncture on the first gravel stage of the event saw the crew lose time but the decision was taken to change the wheel on the road-section not to lose countless minutes on the timed special stage.

Jones scooped a gallant third in class and 85th overall, including maximum points in the FMP Junior Championship in which he is reigning champion.

“It was a tough event with other competitors crashing out or breaking down, I’m elated to scoop a class podium on the début with Owen [Evans] and build our confidence.” enthused Jones.

“Mid-way through the final loop of stages we hit a large compression in the road which broke the bootlid catch, meaning we had to complete the last stage with the boot open! Added to our puncture earlier on in the day, it felt rewarding to score the result we did.” added the 19 year-old.
